1954 - Nash's auto maker and president George Mason started negotiations with Hudson's auto maker president Barrits and agreed on a merger. May 1st, 1954 the American Motors Corporation was founded. In 1956, American Motors launched the new Rambler that became its own make. Though it received cheers from the press, it could not hide the fact that AMC's fleet dated back to 1952. Although American Motors was able to report the 2,000,000th car built after Nash's sophisticated unibody concept, the year ended with a loss.
1956 - AMC introduced the limited series Rambler Rebel.
1958 - Rambler got a new design. The names Nash and Hudson disappeared in favor of Ambassador by Rambler.

1972 - Matador and Jeep Commando introduced.

1978 - AMC Concord introduced.
1979 - AMC Spirit introduced. Deal was reached where Renault (the new shareholder pumping in needed funds) sold Jeeps in France and Columbia while AMC dealers in the USA sold Renaults.
1980 - Eagle introduced. The last Pacers were delivered. Concord and Spirit were all what was left of the AMC car line.
1981 - Jeep Scrambler introduced as a pickup truck version of the popular CJ (Initials stand for Civilian Jeep). Eagle SV/4 and Eagle Kammback introduced.
1982 - Announcement that
Renault would be responsible for the construction of AMC cars.
1983 - An alliance reached between AMC and Renault (now a major stockholder) which introduced the Renault Alliance. Concord and Spirit discontinued. AM General, producing the Hummer and other US government vehicles was sold, mainly because of political reasons. The pentagon had problems with the fact that a company making military equipment for the USA was controlled by the management of a French governmental company.
1984 - Jeep Cherokee and Wagoneer were introduced, CJ5 was dropped. Renault Encore introduced.
1986 - First year Eagles were sold without the AMC emblems. Jeep Comanche released, CJ7 replaced by Wrangler and Renault GTA introduced.
1987 - Renault departed company from AMC. In September all AMC and Renault cars were renamed "Eagle". American Motors becomes the Jeep/Eagle division of Chrysler.
1998 - American Motors Jeep/Eagle division of Chrysler and Chrysler itself has been merged with Daimler-Benz and is now marketed as Daimler-Chrysler of the Daimler-Chrysler Group.
Today - Hummer and Jeep® are
