Auto repair manual, prior to 1980, was published as one book covering all BMW models. The complete automobile manufacturer repair manual applied to all the different makes produced by BMW. These repair manuals contained over 1000 pages and spanned a 5 to 7 year period. Available within this behemoth repair manual the reader had access to fluid capacities, torque specifications, firing order, decoding vehicle identification numbers and troubleshooting tips to solve automotive problems.
Auto repair manual also contained sections on "Unit Repair". The unit repair sections of older repair manuals had information on major components installed in their referenced automobile. Repair manual unit repair covered engine, transmission, carburetor, brakes, emissions control systems, charging, starting, electronic ignition, front end alignment, and steering. Unfortunately today the automobile mechanic is forced to purchase an individual auto repair manual covering only the auto repair they're trying to accomplish.
