Carburetor on an automobile atomizes gas then mixes these fine liquid particles with air. Carburetor performs this mixing process in the carburetor throttle body while air is drawn through the carburetor by a vacuum created in a car, truck, van, Sport-Utility Vehicle and minivan automotive engine. This is why a carburetor is located on top of the engine.
Carburetor history begins in 1885 when Gottlieb Daimler invented what is often recognized as the prototype of the modern gas engine. Daimler injected gasoline into the engine through a carburetor because explosive gasoline cannot simply be pumped into a combustion chamber. Carburetor sprays a mixture of gasoline and air into an engine combustion cylinder. This carburetor injected mixture is then ignited by a spark causing a controlled internal explosion. Ironically today's auto owner confuses the term fuel injector with carburetor. Carburetor and fuel injector both perform the same basic function, they inject fuel into a combustion chamber.
Carburetor and fuel injector is considered part of the fuel delivery system. Carburetor Mixes Fuel with Air.
Carburetor history. What is a carburetor? What is a fuel injector? Where is the carburetor located? How does a carburetor work? When to rebuild a carburetor? When to replace a carburetor and why have a carburetor. These are the most ask questions concerning an auto carburetor. Answers to these carburetor questions, other carburetor and fuel injector information and answers can be found on this carburetor and fuel injector web page. Carburetor information contained on this carburetor web page is applicable to every car, truck, van, sport-utility-vehicle, cargo van, motorcycle, and minivan with a gas powered 4-stroke engine equipped with a 1 barrel carburetor, 2 barrel carburetor or 4 barrel carburetor.
Carburetor and Fuel Injector, What Makes Them Different?
The difference between a carburetor and fuel injector is how the fuel is delivered to where the air-fuel mixing process takes place. A carburetor meters fuel, atomizes the fuel and mixes the atomized fuel particles with measured air in the carburetor throttle body. This fuel-air mixture is then sucked, by engine vacuum, into the combustion chamber. Fuel injector measures fuel, atomizes fuel and sends the atomized fuel particles to the combustion chamber where a specified amount of air awaits. Carburetor utilizes engine vacuum, floats, valves, pistons, gaskets, pumps, check balls, needle valves, cams, adjusting screws and other mechanical parts to perform its function of fuel delivery. Fuel injector, on the other hand, is an electrical device utilizing solid state electronic components to perform its function of fuel delivery to the auto engine.
Carburetor Rebuild Kit or Carburetor Replacement?
Mechanical parts required by a carburetor over time wear out, due to their constant movement. This is why carburetor rebuild kits are in great demand by vintage automobile owners, muscle car owners and early model automotive engine owners. Replacing warn carburetor parts with new parts, included in a carburetor rebuild kit, is less expensive then carburetor replacement itself. Sluggish engine, flat acceleration, engine hesitation, rough engine idle, stalling, poor fuel economy, lack of high speed performance, and lack of engine power in general are all reasons to inspect, rebuild, repair, adjust or completely replace the carburetor. There are times when a carburetor rebuild kit will no longer solve an internally deteriorated carburetor problem. Rusted fuel passages discovered in a dissembled carburetor requires complete carburetor replacement.
