Eagle auto history. Eagle auto was introduced in 1980 to replace the AMC (American Motors Corporation) Pacer line of automobiles. 1981 the Eagle SV/4 (Sport Vehicle 4 Wheel Drive) and Eagle Kammback were introduced to the auto buying consumer. 1986 was the first year the Eagle line of automobiles were sold without the familiar AMC emblem displayed on the automobile due to Renault, a French company, acquiring controlling interest in AMC.
Eagle just couldn't find a place to land. Beginning in September of 1987 all AMC and Renault cars were renamed "Eagle" because the complete AMC line of automobiles and Renault cars were both being built by a company in France. Confused yet? It gets better. 1987 was the same year that the American Motors name became the Jeep / Eagle division of Chrysler Motors Corporation. Chrysler wanted the Jeep™ name again in their stable but wanted nothing to do with any AMC cars. However it was a "packaged deal" so Chrysler accepted the terms so they could get the Jeep name. Finally in 1998 the American Motors Jeep / Eagle division of Chrysler Motor Corporation and the Chrysler name itself was merged with the Daimler-Benz auto group of Germany. Now Chrysler automobiles are produced by DaimlerChrysler. AMC has gone the way of four track music tape cartridges and as Neil Armstrong stated during the 20th Century "... the eagle has landed".
