Fiat auto history. FIAT stands for Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino. The FIAT company was founded on July 11, 1899 in Turin. The first Fiat factory was inaugurated in 1900, employed 35 people and produced 24 cars. Fiat manufactures autos, trucks, commercial vehicles, marine engines, trams, taxis and ball bearings.
Fiat Automobile Co. was incorporated in the United States to produce Fiat cars under license and in 1909 the Poughkeepsie factory was built in New York State. Fiat exports cars to France, Austria, Britain and Australia. Fiat 127 model launched in 1971 and was Fiat's first front wheel drive car which was distinctly innovative for its time. The car was a huge success with the one millionth Fiat, model 127, rolling off the assembly line in late 1974.
Fiat acquired Ford Motor Company's tractor and farm machinery operations in 1991 at which time Fiat's construction machinery sector went global under the New Holland banner. In 1993 an agreement was negotiated with Hitachi Co. Machinery Ltd. which expanded an existing joint venture to make Fiat one of the biggest global players in construction machinery auto industry accounting for around 20% of total world output. Fiat launched a special project known as the Fiat Autonomy Program, which produces tailor-made equipment to enable physically disabled people to travel more independently in 1994.
