International auto history. International Harvester started building this light truck in 1960. The International was a four-wheel drive sport / utility vehicle designed for off-road and on road use. International built 11 different models of this light-truck. The International was the first auto to offer a 5 year/100,000 mile engine and anti-corrosion warranty. Over 450,000 of these autos were marketed. International was assembled in Fort Wayne Indiana.

Michigan Electric Company, Fort Wayne, became the first company to operate the International Scout as a fleet vehicle, The Morton Salt Company acquired International Scout 4x4’s without roofs and dispatched them to Morton’s subterranean salt diggings at Grand Saline, Texas in 1961. The International Scout 4x4’s were used by contractors constructing the multi-million dollar Cape Kennedy Merritt launching area for NASA in 1963. The Quickie Chickie restaurant franchise purchased 196 International Scout 4x2s with ovens mounted in their pick-up beds for chicken delivery on the restaurants delivery routes. The United States Postal Service bought 6,745 International Scout 800 four wheel drive autos equipped with right hand drive in 1967. The parade following the inauguration of Richard Nixon as President of the U.S., was led by 14 International Scout 800A’s bearing the administration’s slogan, "Forward Together" in 1969. Brink’s used several International Scouts to service money pick-up points at parking facilities in 1971. These International Scouts were equipped with ballistics aluminum plating and bullet-proof glass. The last International Scout rolled down the International assembly line on October 21, 1980. International currently is developing a new International pickup truck which International claims will be the largest pickup truck to be mass produced.
