Jensen Interceptor was the Mopar-powered English touring car. Jensen is a brand of automobile that was built in West Bromwich, England.
Jensen History:
Alan and Richard Jensen started building cars under their own name (Jensen) in 1931 when they bought out a local garage in West Bromwich, England. From the beginning, they saved time and money by building only custom bodies and interiors; they bought chassis and engines from other carmakers. Eventually they built their own chassis, but Jensen never did build their own engine. Some of the engines they used were the Ford flathead V-8, Austin 6-cylinder, Lotus model 907 DOHC 4-cylinder, Chrysler 360 and 383/440.
At a time when the Jensen company was struggling, and welcomed the idea of producing a sports car along cane Donald Healey and his son Geoffrey. With the help of Barry Bilbie, Alfred Vickers, and Bill Heynes, among others, the first Jensen-Healey car was introduced at the 1972 Geneva Motor Show.
Jensen-Healey and Jensen GT were built by Jensen Motors Ltd. of West Bromwich, England until May 1976. A little over 10,000 Jensen-Haley convertibles were manufactured during this time. Some of the last Jensen cars to roll out the doors were the Jensen GT ('76 model year) of which only 509 were produced. All Jensen-Healey and Jensen GT automobiles came equipped with the brand-new 2 litre, 16-valve Lotus built 907 engine. Home market and European destination cars had twin 40mm Dellorto carburetors while U.S. Federal destination cars came with twin Stromberg carburetors.
Jensen-Healey original cars have a simple but pleasant interior; plastic center console, no wood on dash board (72 only) or wood on glove box, rubber floor mats, black interiors (a few early Jensen Healey cars are seen with tan interior) and square-cornered headlight cowls distinguish these models. Very early Jensen Healey joint venture cars will have the notable absence of a passenger side door lock (which was quickly added on the '73 Jensen-Healey model year) and auxiliary oil filler canister mounted to firewall in engine compartment. Some early Jensen Healey joint venture cars have no oil cooler as well.
A total of 10,501 MkI and MkII Jensen-Healey' cars were built by the time production ceased in 1976. Some former employees attempted to revive the company in the 1980s and a few Interceptors were built using the Chrysler 360 engine, but financial problems again forced them to close after just a few years.
