History of Headlights and Taillights.

The headlight and taillight has come along way from the decorative containers, housing candles, wind screens and reflectors, attached to the early horseless carriages. Electric headlights, powered by the automobile battery, began as a single light bulb placed in the center of a reflector behind a glass lens. Headlight later became a sealed beam headlight assembly housing all the needed components in a single glass unit. The headlight then reverted back to a single light bulb placed in the center of a reflector which is located behind a plastic lens and today referred to as a headlight assembly. Taillights on the other hand have evolved from round, rectangle, oblong and square familiar styles, to fashionable Euro style taillights, to finally utilizing today's advanced taillight technology. So-called taillights, brake lights and turn signal indicators seen on the rear of many of today's automobiles do not contain an electric light bulb. Referring to these rear automotive luminary devices a taillight, brake light or turn signal light would probably be incorrect. These tail illumination devices, brake illumination devices and rear turn signal indicators contain a Light-Emitting Diode (LED) array within a waterproof housing and called a taillight assembly anyway.

LED is a semiconductor device specifically designed to emit light when an electrical current is applied to it. A red LED is currently employed because of its lower cost.
