Die Cast Collectibles, What Are They?
Automobile manufactures, over the years, have created "specialty" automobiles expressly for a company's unique product promotion or advertising needs. Some of these specialty automobiles have been painstakingly replicated, in die cast miniature models. Today these die-cast automobiles are referred to as collectible autos because they are sought after by many collectors worldwide.
Die-Cast Scale Model Explained.
Die cast collectibles, miniature cars, radio controlled automobiles, model cars, model motorcycles, model ships, etc., are scaled down replicas of an original item. A 1:18 scale Pontiac die-cast collectible means that the die cast collectible is 1/18th the size of the original Pontiac. A 1:24 scale Pontiac die-cast collectible means that the die cast collectible is 1/24th the size of the original Pontiac. A 1:32 scale Pontiac die-cast collectible means that the die cast collectible is 1/32nd the size of the original Pontiac. A 1:43 scale Pontiac die-cast collectible means that the die cast collectible is 1/43rd the size of the original Pontiac. To further illustrate, a 1/18 scale Pontiac die-cast collectible automobile means that roughly 18 Pontiac die-cast automobiles would need to be stacked on top of each other and placed end-to-end to equal approximately the same size as the originally built Pontiac automobile.

Larry Johnson was an Iowa farmer and later a car salesman who also loved driving fast cars. He was also the friend of Arnie Beswick's, having met the fellow farmer and performance car enthusiast at an Iowa cattle sale barn. It was widely accepted in Eastern Iowa, and particularly the Low Moor community, that Johnson had the fastest car in the area.
Come 1962, Johnson caught wind of some new aluminum front end 421 Super Duty Catalina's being built, but was having problems getting one through the proper Pontiac ordering channels. Beswick called on some of his Pontiac contacts and the bright red 421 S/D Catalina was delivered to the Johnson dealership. The two quickly set the car up for competition and began campaigning it at drag strips throughout the Midwest. The car was christened the Pasionate Poncho, and it soon established itself as one of the machines to beat. The name was feared and revered in the Super Stock ranks across the country. The 1977 Pontiac Firebird received a new "Batmobile" front end with quad square headlamps and the engine choices became very complex. The hood scoops on Pontiac Firebird Formulas changed one more time on the 1977-year model. The hood scoops were still located in the forward area of the hood but now recessed, flatter, more square and non-functional. The Chevy inline six was changed to Buick's 105-horsepower 231-cubic inch (3.8-liter) V6 engine. The new 135 horsepower 301-cubic inch (4.9-liter) Pontiac V8 engine was only available in Esprits and Formulas (along with the Pontiac 350). The Trans AM's shaker hood was redesigned to cover the 185-horsepower Oldsmobile's 403-cubic-inch V8 engine or the Pontiac 400 with 200 horsepower. Some Firebirds in California came with the 305- Chevy and 350-cubic-inch (5.0- and 5.7-liter) V8. The Trans Am was firmly established as the car of the 1970s when Burt Reynolds drove a black-and-gold Firebird in the movie Smokey and The Bandit. The Bandit's Trans Am looked great, but it wasn't that quick - Hot Rod magazine tested a similar car and could only achieve a 16.02-second run going 89.64 mph down the quarter-mile. In 1977 Pontiac sold 68,745 Trans-AM's along with 86,991 other assorted Firebirds. Make your die cast collection proud, order yours today!
